CLIFTON FORGE – Rosa Clark Higgins Murphy, “Granny Higgins”, 91, of 4611 Nicelytown Road, Clifton Forge and formerly of Spruce Street in Covington, died Sunday, April 4, 2010 at her residence.

She was born July 25, 1918 in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late James G. and Effie Conner Clark. She was a homemaker throughout her life and a member of Lone Star Advent Christian Church. She enjoyed cooking and shopping.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Lewis Edgar Higgins Sr. and her second husband, Carl “Buck” Murphy; two sons-in-law, Elbert Nicely Jr. and Leroy Bess, two stepbrothers, one stepsister, three half-brothers, two half-sisters and a granddaughter, Sheila Dawn Higgins.

She is survived by three daughters, Nellie Higgins Yopp Bess of Covington, Faye Higgins Nicely of Clifton Forge and Kathy Higgins Moore and husband Bobby Jr. of Covington; three sons, Odie G. “Sonny” Higgins and wife, Brenda of Clifton Forge, Harold W. Higgins Sr. and wife, Pam of Covington and Lewis “Eddie” Higgins and wife, Catherine of Clifton Forge; a step brother, Jack Miller of Roanoke; 16 grandchildren, Ricky Higgins and wife, Diana, Timmy Higgins and wife Susie, Teresa Higgins Byer and husband, Willy, Jimmy Yopp III and wife, Bonnie, Bobby Yopp and wife, Jerie, Robin Yopp Drummond and husband, Harley, Mary Yopp McLear, Gary Yopp and wife, Beckey, Missy Higgins Adcox and husband, Wally, Harold “Toy” Higgins Jr. and wife Lorrie, Beverly Higgins Hall and friend, Mike, Ruben Higgins and wife, Lisa, Melanie Higgins Riley and husband, Scherrile, Chanda Higgins, Heidi Moore and friend, Doug and Sabrina Moore and friend, Mike; 27 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with the Rev. Doug Moore and the Rev. Edith Snedegar officiating. Interment will follow in Central Advent Christian Cemetery, Clifton Forge.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Ricky Higgins, Timmy Higgins, Jimmy Yopp III, Bobby Yopp, Gary Yopp, Harold Higgins Jr., and Ruben Higgins. Honorary pallbearers will be Harley Drummond, Willie Byer, Wally Adcox, Mike Boggs and Doug Altizer.

The family will receive friends this evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Faye Nicely, 4611 Nicelytown Rd., Clifton Forge.

The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Mountain Regional Hospice Volunteers, P.O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, Va. 24422 or to Lone Star Advent Christian Church, 4704 Nicelytown Rd., Clifton Forge, Va. 24422.
