Warm Springs– The Chargers, led by Head Coach Jake Phillips and senior captain quarterback Wyatt Campbell, have decimated teams in the first five games of their season. On both sides of the ball, Coach Phillips has them playing like State Championship contending teams of decades past. Star quarterback Wyatt Campbell’s ability to be a dual threat has left opponents scratching their heads wondering what is going to happen next. Senior Braiden Mabe has been a force of unstoppable nature on the defensive side of the ball Wreaking havoc in the backfield and leaving opponents nowhere to run between the tackles. The Chargers have now outscored opponents 345-18, a number that explains just how much success the Chargers have found thus far. Bath County began the district portion of their season Friday night against the struggling 0-6 Eastern Montgomery Mustangs and Bath showed no mercy.
Bath received the opening kickoff and went straight to work, as on the second play of the game Wyatt the true superman Campbell broke free on what started out looking like a busted play and took it to the house for a 46-yard touchdown run. After the sure-footed Braiden Mabe kicked the extra point, Bath was out to an early 7-0 lead.
After a late hit personal foul penalty on Bath gave the Mustangs great field position on the kickoff, it looked like Eastern Montgomery would probably tie it up. Bath’s defense would have none of it though tackling the Mustangs in the backfield on multiple plays and causing them to punt on fourth-and- 17. Two plays later, Superman Campbell decided he wanted another one and took the ball 48 yards down the field for another six points and his second touchdown of the night.
Bath’s kickoff gave the ball to the Mustangs on the 48-yard line, but unfortunately for Eastern Montgomery they went three-and-out punting to the Chargers. Ethan Bryant got Bath’s ground game going picking up double digit yards on three plays before Luke Turner took the ball 38 yards into the endzone for another Bath County touchdown. After a failed attempt at an extra point, it was 20-0 for the Chargers.
On the Mustang’s next drive, they decided to air the ball out on second down, but Wyatt Campbell had none of it. He caught the interception and took it all the way over 40 yards and scored his third touchdown still inside the first quarter. The Mustangs would get one of their two first downs in the first half on the next possession, but ultimately ended up punting the ball. The Bath offense methodically worked their way down the field with various run plays. Inside the 20-yard line, Campbell found number 51 Bryson Whiting for a 14-yard Bath County score.
The Chargers had no problem for the rest of the game continuously scoring on offense and stopping the Mustangs while on defense. Bath County ended the game with 63 points and Eastern Montgomery finished with zero. Next week the Chargers travel to Craig County to face the now 5-1 Rockets in their next district matchup.
