Mr. Harold Lewis “Doc” Carter, age 86, of 5301 Dunlap Creek Road, died Monday, April 5, 2010, at Lewis Gale Medical Center, Salem. He was the husband of Pearl Thomas Carter.
Mr. Carter was born March 24, 1924 in Earlhurst, the son of the late Jesse Payne Carter and Bertie Greene Carter. He was a graduate of Covington High School, Class of 1943.
Joining the service in June 19, 1943, he served his country in World War II with the 567th AAA Battalion, with the US 3rd Army and later the US 9th Army in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe, and in 1944, his unit was attached to the 101st Airborne at the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharged from the service, January 30, 1946.
He worked for the Dept. of Defense as a powder and explosives inspector at Hercules Radford Army Ammunition Plant. Mr. Carter attended Texas Christian University and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from Lynchburg College.
From 1954 until 1986, he was employed as a teacher with Alleghany County Public Schools, teaching government, history, shop and coaching part-time at Boiling Springs, Dunlap and Alleghany High Schools, retiring with thirty-two years of service.
Mr. Carter was involved with the Wildlife Management Division of the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries from 1987 until 1989 and was a volunteer forest warden with U.S. Department of Agriculture until the program concluded.
He served on the Alleghany County Board of Zoning Appeals for a number of years before stepping down in 2009 and was instrumental in bringing telephone service to the Crows -Hematite area.
He was a longtime member of Moss Run Baptist Church where he served his church as a Deacon and Treasurer. Mr. Carter was a charter member of the Dunlap Fire Department, a member of the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Post 4 and the National Rifle Association.
He was also a member of the Texas Christian University Alumni, the Lynchburg College Alumni and the League of Older Americans.
In addition to his wife, Pearl Thomas Carter, Mr. Carter is survived by a son, David L. Carter; one sister, Vera Helen Carter Carroll of Florida; a number of nieces and nephews and his beloved Labrador retriever, Calamity Jane.
In addition to his parents, Jesse Payne Carter and Bertie Greene Carter, Mr. Carter was preceded in death by three brothers Oscar Hughes Carter, Jesse Johnson Carter, Sr., Ira Randolph Carter and five sisters, Annie Payne Carter Baker, Lillian Pauline Carter Noel, Virginia Rosalia Carter Pearson, Nina Marie Carter Via, G. Evelyn Carter Arrington Faucette.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, April 8, 2010 from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with Pastor William Kelly officiating. Interment will follow in Carter Cemetery.
Graveside rites will be conducted by Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Pallbearers will be Ricky Breeden, Jesse Carter, III, Lewis McAllister, Richard Carter, Erskine Graves, Michael McAllister and Bruce Rainwater. Honorary pallbearers will be Paul J. Thomas, Jesse Carter, Jr., Preston Carson, Edward O’Rourke, O.E. Parker, Jr., John Owens, H. Burton Parker, Dave Mann and Kenny Rice.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 7:00 P.M. until 8:30 P.M. at Loving Funeral Home.
