Alleghany grabs first place in district

LOW MOOR – Alleghany’s varsity volleyball team took one step closer to a Three District championship after maintaining home court advantage following a straight-set victory over Radford winning 25-22 25-14 25-11 last Thursday.
 
With the rights to first place in the district on the line in this volleyball contest the Cougars took sole possession over and now are in the driver’s seat towards a district title with three matches left to go in the regular season.
 
Senior Kaiya Lian had a big-time performance with 19 kills, 18 digs, and also dished out six assists. Senior Bryce Leitch put together a quality performance with 14 digs and eight kills. Meanwhile, sophomore Kendra Dressler led the way with a match-high with 29 assists.
 
The Cougars swept their regular season matches with the Bobcats after the two programs went five sets in their first match back on September 17. 
 
Alleghany improved to 17-3 overall and 9-0 overall following their win against Radford. The Cougars have three games left, two on the road against Patrick County and Glenvar before they wrap up their regular home contest against Floyd County.
 
On Tuesday the Cougars are at Patrick County.
 
Last Thursday prior to the varsity girls game, the JV team also picked up their 17th win and improved to 17-3 overall as well following a two-set victory over Glenvar winning 25-13, 25-20.
 
Days before their first-place showdown with Radford, Alleghany was on the road against James River on Tuesday in Buchanan where the Cougars defeated the Knights 25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 25-22.
 
Lian, Lietch, and senior Laken Tingler combined for 44 kills in their four-set win. Lian had a match-high 20, while Tingler had 13, and Leitch added 11.
 
Leitch led all Alleghany players with 20 digs, while Lian had 16, Tingler had 14, junior Savannah Cash had 13, and senior Jayahna Hughes added 12.
 
Dressler had a staggering 48 assists, while Leitch and junior Hannah Hensley each had a pair of blocks.
