The Jackson River Garden Club met May 11 at Covington Baptist Church with 16 members and one guest present. Refreshments were served by Nancy Tyree with assistance from Edna Tigrett, and Sue Winston.
President Sue Winston called the meeting to order with the reading of the club collect. A welcome was extended to guest Sharon Ferguson. Concerns were expressed for the members ill or unable to attend.
April minutes were read and accepted.
Under old business Vivian Sutphin gave a brief report on the Habitat For Humanity project.
She stated perennial plants are still needed, and annuals will be appreciated. The Penny Pines Program certificate for the donation given in honor of Mrs. Kathleen O. Byers was displayed for all to observe. The 2010-2011 yearbooks were printed and available, thanks to Judy Hazen.
Sue Winston announced a flower show in Richmond October 2010 will have arrangements created to imitate works of art.
Volunteers were asked to place posters and/or arrangements at the depot, library, a bank and city hall during the week of June 6-12 in observance of National Garden Club Week.
Bea Kasnick announced she has planted flowers in the planters at the Covington Post Office.
The treasurer’s report was given by Judy Hazen.
Sue Winston, outgoing president, thanked the club for their support during her three years as president. She encouraged the members to keep the club thriving, reaching out to the community through civic projects, and inviting new members.
Bi Plasters informed Sue Winston that a donation had been sent to Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs and her name is to be placed on the permanent record of the Books of Honor at the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs Headquarters in Richmond. As a token of appreciation for her outstanding leadership for the past three years, she was also presented a special flower arrangement.
Judging chairman Nancy Kruszyna along with Darlene Taylor reported the results for awards in design: Connie Oliver one blue; Kitty Fitzgerald one red; Kitty Carson one blue.
Awards in horticulture: Sue Winston one yellow; Connie Oliver seven blue, one yellow; Edna Tigrett four blue, one yellow; Judy Hazen one blue, one red; Kitty Carson three blue, one red; Kitty Fitzgerald one blue, two yellow, one honorable mention.
Parliamentarian Bi Plasters conducted the installation of 2010-2011 Jackson River Garden Club officers: President, Harriet Byers; Vice-president, Nancy Tyree; Recording Secretary, Kitty Carson.
Sue Winston passed the club gavel to Harriet Byers and the meeting was adjourned.
The June 8 meeting will be held at the Fudge Street Cafe to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the Jackson River Garden Club.
