HINTON, W.Va. – The Covington baseball team traveled across state lines to take on Summers County Monday and picked up an 11-6 win over the Bobcats.
Bothers Matthew and Michael Myers belted two-run bombs in the fourth and fifth innings to lead the Cougars at the plate. Matthew went a perfect 3-for-3, driving in three runs, while Michael was 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Shawn Perkins also had a multi-hit day for the Cougars, going 2-for-4 out of his lead-off spot.
Preston Waddell picked up the win on the mound for the Cougars, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits over four innings pitched.
Waddell struck out five and walked three.
Chad Lipes pitched two and two-thirds innings of one-hit ball in relief, striking out four and walking one.
“Chad pitched really well for us in relief and we swung the bats well today,” said Covington coach Mick Strand. “Matthew and Michael really gave us a boost with two big home runs and Derek Harris came off the bench to snag a hard liner and start a game-ending double play.”
Covington (5-2) now begins preparations for Friday’s Pioneer District opener on the road at Craig County. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m.
