Leonard Mitchell Andrews
Leonard Mitchell Andrews, age 84, of Covington, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at home, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Carol Baker Andrews.
Mitchell was born on September 21, 1940 in Natural Well, Virginia to the late Thomas Massie Andrews and the late Hattie Wilson Peters Andrews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Nellie Buchanan, his step-mother, Anna “Betty” Watson Andrews, parents-in-law Delmar “Bert” Baker and Emma Plott Baker, and a brother-in-law, Charles “Charlie” Baker.
Mitchell was a 1958 graduate of Covington High School and worked at Westvāco for 49 years before retiring in 2007. He was a member of Mt. Carmel Methodist Church in Covington and enjoyed assisting the other church members every fall in their annual production of applebutter. He enjoyed gardening and tending his lawn. For many years, he took great pride in being the last in his neighborhood to mow his grass each autumn and the first to mow each spring. He also liked hunting and fishing with his brother. A fan of baseball and football, Mitchell was a lifelong supporter of the New York Yankees as well as a fan of the Indianapolis (formerly Baltimore) Colts. In his later years, Mitchell loved nothing more than receiving visits from his great-grandchildren.
In addition to his loving wife, Mitchell is survived by two children, a son, Richard “Rickey” Andrews and wife, Melinda, of Covington, and a daughter, Julie Andrews, of Covington. His grandchildren, Steven Andrews and wife, Tracy, of Roanoke, Courtney Andrews, Austin Tucker,
and Lakin Tucker, all of Covington. Great-grandchildren Kenzleigh, Brittney, Zymir, Greyson, and Kiera, as well as his godson, Damien Hollenbeck. Mitchell is also survived by two brothers, Hershel Andrews and Larry Andrews, both of Covington, four sisters-in-law, Berta Henning and
husband Gus of Vinton, Rebecca Mann of Clifton Forge, Susan Rock of Covington, Sandra Hernandez and husband Dan of Roanoke, a brother-in-law, Richard Baker and wife Beverly of Covington, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and extended family.
Funeral Arrangements are being handled by Arritt Funeral Home in Covington, VA. The family will receive family and friends at Arritt Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 1, 2024 from 6:00 to 7:00 PM.
The funeral will be held at Mt. Carmel Methodist Church in Covington, VA on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Doug Hollenbeck and the Rev. Michael Simmons officiating. Roger Amos, Jim Downer, Jackie Keyser, Gene Lee, Rodney Stump, and Ray Tolley
will serve as pallbearers. Interment will follow immediately after the service at Alleghany Memorial Park. Family and friends are welcome to stop by the house at any time.
