COVINGTON – It’s hard to imagine it, but we’re already approaching halfway through the high school football season already.

Through the first four weeks of the season, Alleghany has dominated their opponents on both sides of the field with their offense and their defense.

Offensively, right now, no defense can match the Cougars weapons on offense. AHS has a ton of weapons in the rushing-attack, pass-game, you name it. It starts with Des Jordan at quarterback. The junior is having a monstrous season thus far with 12 TD passes and seven rushing scores.

Jordan’s supporting cast is a long list. From Carter Nicely to Xzavier Hayslett to Sarge Persinger to Gavin Via to Hayden and Hunter Knighton. The list goes on. Defenses right now cannot solve Alleghany’s offense.

Defensively, the Cougars are only giving up under 12 points per game.

One might look at their opponents they’ve faced in the first four weeks and might not be impressed.

Well, let’s look at their first four opponents, a combined record of 3-13. However, Alleghany has beaten a pair of teams from the Shenandoah District and a team from the Valley District. Both juggernaut districts.

The win over Fort Defiance from the Shenandoah District has become even more impressive seeing as the Indians recently pulled off one their programs biggest upsets ever when they defeated Riverheads, who has won seven out of the last nine state championships.

Regardless of who they play and where they play, good teams get the job done and Alleghany is a good team.

This week will certainly be their biggest test yet when they begin Three Rivers District play and host Radford (3-1).

The Bobcats are on a three-game win streak after losing their season opener to George Wythe.

The Cougars only regular season loss last year was to Radford, losing 49-22.

A win over Radford would be one of the biggest in the short history of the program and a statement victory at that. A win would solidify Alleghany as a top team in not just the district, but in the region as well. A region that consists of Rustburg, Turner Ashby, Spotswood, and many more.

Tale of the tape: Radford is averaging 28 points per game, while giving up 19 per game defensively. Meanwhile, Alleghany is averaging just under 50 points per game and giving up less than 12.
