COVINGTON – Four weeks into the season and it’s very safe to say that Alleghany has a very good football team.

The Cougars remained unbeaten at 4-0 following their 42-7 non-district victory over Greenbrier East on Friday at Casey Field in Covington.

Good teams take care of business and beat teams they should get wins against. That’s what Alleghany has done thus far this season, and they’ve made it look easy against their four non-district opponents, including two blowout wins over teams in the tough Shenandoah District, the same district the Cougars will be turning to come 2025.

The point differential isn’t even close as AHS has outscored their opponents 199-47 through the first four weeks.

With a team that finished 9-2 last season, this team might be even more talented and make even more noise come playoff season.

One thing to look at so far four weeks into the season is that a few weeks back, Alleghany went up I-81N and defeated Fort Defiance handedly.

That same Indians team which lost to the Cougars, pulled off a huge upset over powerhouse Riverheads the following week. The Gladiators have won seven out of the last nine state titles.

What does that mean? Could be nothing. Or it could be an indication that Alleghany is right there with the powerhouses like a Riverheads program.

Now something to also take note of, let’s remind folks that quarterback Des Jordan is only a junior and is having a district player of the year kind of season. The dual-threat QB has already surpassed double digits in passing touchdowns following his three-TD performance in the win over the Spartans. Jordan now has 19 total scores on the year (12 pass, 7 rush).

Jordan is getting a great season thus far from his supporting cast. Carter Nicely is averaging over 70-yards rushing in four games, while three Cougars have eclipsed over 100-yds receiving, including Xzavier Hayslett, who leads the team in receptions, including five TD’s.

Let’s not forget about the defense that is now following the win over Greenbrier East is only giving up less than 12 points a game. Jay Godfrey, who was our preseason defensive player to watch, added a pick-six in the win on Friday.

Right now, Alleghany is a force to be reckoned with. There is a lot of football to be left to played.
