As the House wrapped up the District Work Period last week, House Republicans have been gearing up to meet the many challenges ahead. We will continue our oversight of the Biden/Harris Administration, including their poor record on the border and the economy. On a brighter note, I had a great time seeing familiar faces and meeting new ones across the Shenandoah Valley. As we head into September and several busy weeks of session, I will continue fighting for the best interests of Virginia’s Sixth District and for the good of our great Nation.
August District Work Period
As many of you know, Congress spent the last month of August in a district work period. It’s a time set aside to meet with constituents and hear directly from the people we represent in our home states. I enjoyed being back in Virginia’s Sixth District, traveling up and down I-81 to meet with constituents, award community leaders with recognition in the Congressional Record, attend great events, and host a three-day healthcare tour.
The past few years have brought significant changes and challenges to our country, including a decline in the affordability and accessibility of our healthcare system. For the past few years, I’ve heard from countless constituents concerned about their healthcare. That’s why I took a tour of our District’s healthcare providers. It was an invaluable opportunity for me to connect with dedicated individuals in the healthcare field, hear their vital concerns, and ensure they have a strong voice in the policymaking process.
Another major issue I heard from constituents this month was the burden this Administration’s economic policies have placed on small businesses and American families. It’s something we must address immediately, starting with cutting out-of-control spending and rolling back the administrative state.
As we return to Washington this week, we will continue to work on commonsense policies, rein in reckless inflationary spending, and provide much relief for hardworking families.
Spending Fight Ahead
You may have seen recent news about the upcoming “spending” fight in Congress this September. As we all painfully know, Congress has been on an out-of-control spending spree for several years, leaving the American people to foot the bill. That bill has come due through rising costs, higher taxes, and skyrocketing inflation—an unacceptable situation.
With the September 30th deadline for the fiscal year approaching, Speaker Mike Johnson unveiled his plan for a continuing resolution last week. This plan aims to avoid a partial government shutdown at the end of the month, fund the government through March 2025, and secure our federal election process. The resolution includes the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which passed the House back in July. This critical legislation requires voters to prove their citizenship to vote in federal elections. It’s disappointing that many of my colleagues on the other side can’t support this commonsense principle.
With $35.2 trillion in national debt, we must prioritize balancing our budget and reforming our budgetary process to ensure greater accountability for future generations. Additionally, every American citizen should have the opportunity to select their elected representatives
without the possibility of non-citizens voting.
Rest assured, House Republicans are committed to restoring fiscal sanity, steering our nation back toward economic prosperity, and protecting our federal elections.
Our Borders Are in Disarray
For the past three and a half years, Americans have witnessed the dangerous consequences of Border Czar Kamala Harris’ Far-Left open border policies. Since their first day in office, the Biden-Harris Administration has completely dismantled our Southern Border. This year alone, there have been over 420 illegal immigrants listed on the FBI’s terrorist watchlist who have attempted to evade the U.S. Border Patrol. Americans cannot afford another four years of these lawless open-border policies that continue to put every American citizen’s safety on the line.
Just last week, it was reported that armed illegal immigrants from the Tren de Aragua gang took over an apartment complex in Colorado. The FBI has warned about the significant national security risk that the Tren de Aragua poses to all Americans. In a viral video, members of the gang can be seen waving guns at the front door of apartments, demanding rent payments from residents in exchange for their safety. Yet, the Biden-Harris Administration refuses to acknowledge this major national security threat. No American should fear for their family’s safety in their own home.
