WARM SPRINGS – Dr. David Smith, outgoing superintendent of Bath County Public Schools, has accepted a similar position with Prince Edward County.
The Prince Edward County School Board approved Dr. Smith’s appointment during a meeting Wednesday night. He expects to begin work in Prince Edward County in July.
Located about 50 miles east of Lynchburg, the Prince Edward County School System is composed of three schools with an enrollment of about 2,400 students.
“I’m excited about the new opportunity,” Dr. Smith said Thursday afternoon. “I’m looking forward to learning the Prince Edward County community while meeting the parents and staff.”
Dr. Smith has served as superintendent of Bath County Public Schools since 1999. In July of 2009, he announced his intentions to retire on June 30, 2010, coinciding with the end of his current contract with the Bath County School Board.
“Plans are subject to change over time,” said Dr. Smith, explaining his decision to pursue the Prince Edward County post. “As I thought more about retirement versus continuing to work, I was encouraged to look around at some other possibilities.
“The Prince Edward opening looked like a good opportunity for professional growth and continuing to work in public education,” he said.
A graduate of Fort Defiance High School, Dr. Smith received his bachelor of arts degree in music from Bridgewater College and his master’s degree in music education with a minor in secondary education from James Madison University.
He received his doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Virginia.
Dr. Smith came to Bath County from Bedford County, where he served as the public information director and talented and gifted coordinator for the Bedford County School System.
Dr. Smith said he and his wife, Helen, have enjoyed their time in Bath County.
“I appreciate the opportunity to have worked with the community and the educators in Bath County,” he said. “I’m very proud of the positive gains we’ve made over time and student achievement for the children of Bath County.
“Unfortunately, this will necessitate a move,” Dr. Smith added. “We’re going to miss the fine people of Bath County.”
The Bath County School Board has initiated a search to find Dr. Smith’s successor. The announcement of a new superintendent in Bath County is expected in May.
