MONTEREY – The Covington boys basketball team traveled to Highland County Wednesday and posted an 81-44 Pioneer District win over the Rams.
The Cougars jumped out to a 16-6 lead after one and led 43-26 at the half.
Michael Myers record a double-double in the win, finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Ryan Hall added 13 points, while Ryan Kidd also had double figures with 11 points and added five steals.
Chad Gutshall led Highland with 13 points, while James Vaus added 10.
Covington improves to 5-5 on the season and stayed tied atop the Pioneer District standings with James River and Parry McCluer with perfect 2-0 records.
Bath County is 1-1 in district play, while Craig County and Highland are both 0-2.
Covington will be back in action Friday with a pivotal game at district-powerhouse James River. Action begins at 6 p.m. with the junior varsity game.
The Cougars made it a sweep with a 57-25 win in the preliminary.
Jordan Miller led Covington with 12 points, while Stephen Robinson added 10. Steven Blegins and William Henderson just missed double figures with nine points each.
Austin Smith scored six and Warren Harrison and Tanner Paxton added four points each. Brandon Phillips chipped in two and Jacorey Hughes rounded out the CHS scoring with one point.
