The Alleghany Historical Society is sponsoring the third Festival of Trees at the Covington C&O Depot. A silent auction will be held on trees, wreaths, garlands and gifts until Monday from 4-6 p.m. The successful bidder will be notified by phone and may pick up their item after 6:15 p.m. Monday. Proceeds will go toward the restoration of the Masonic Theatre and other society projects.

Please visit the depot during regular hours on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 p. m. Saturday, Santa, courtesy of Ottmer Newcomb, will visit the depot after the Covington Christmas parade.

Pictures with Santa will be available and light refreshments will be served.

Our exhibits features a collection of nativity scenes from all over the world on loan from the Rev. Jamie Pharr, the Polar Express model train layout owned by Paul Linkenhoker and model cars of the famed Chessie passenger train and M1 steam turbine locomotive owned by Horton Beirne.

The news coverage of our Festival of Trees and other Historical Society events has been excellent and we would like to thank Horton Beirne and his staff.

We would also like to thank Walmart and Food Lion for furnishing refreshments for our events and Mead-Westvaco for helping with expenses.

Thanks also to Loving Funeral Home for the loan of their podium and James David and Linda Williams and Tom and Wanda Callaham for donating large Christmas trees.

B.R. Rupert, Susan Parker Potter and daughter Kaitlyn entertained us with Christmas carols. We were also privileged to have Kathy and Frank Johnson, Barbara Laslo, the Mason Family Brass Ensemble and Steve Nicholson entertain with Christmas music.

Byron Faidley, Jim Faidley, Jaimie Pharr, Elizabeth Bodkin and Katie Diehl did a wonderful job in helping to set up the exhibits.

Finally, we would like to thank the Festival Committee – Cindy George, Karen Hammond, Shelly Dudley and Anne McMennamey for making the Festival so successful.
