SPRINGWOOD – The Bath County girls basketball team traveled to James River for a Pioneer District matchup and posted a 55-34 win over the host Knights.

Shonique Gardener’s 22-points, 14-rebound double-double led Bath County, while Angela Herscher also hit double digits with 15 points. Jailyn Ford just missed a double-double with eight points and 14 boards.

Bath County led 28-22 at the half, but outscored the Knights 27-12 in the second half as they stayed tied atop the Pioneer District standings with Covington and Parry McCluer.

“We can really thank Alleghany for the way we played tonight. The loss to them didn’t set well with the girls and in turn we had our best defensive and rebounding outing of the season,” said Bath County coach Keith Lindsay. “Shonique came up big for us tonight with 22 points and 14 rebounds.

“Angela had a great transition game handing out six assists, producing 15 points and going five of six from the foul line,” added Lindsay. “The other unsung hero of the night was Jailyn (Ford), who just missed a double-double with eight points and 14 rebounds. Hopefully we can bottle up this performance and bring it to the table again when we play Parry McCluer at home Thursday.”

Cheyenne Falls led James River (1-10, 0-2) with eight points.

Bath County (7-3, 2-0) hosts Parry McCluer Thursday in a pivotal Pioneer District matchup before traveling to Alleghany Saturday for a non-district game.
