Dear Sir,
At the YMCA, our most important goal is to enrich the lives of those in our community. When some are left out, it leaves us all a bit incomplete.
That’s because providing a safe and nurturing environment benefits everyone. By introducing youth to experiences that will help them grow into responsible, successful adults, we make the community we love a better place to live. One child at time. One family at a time.
YMCA programs teach young people important values such as caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Through a variety of fun and rewarding activities, they develop valuable skills while they gain confidence and self-esteem. You simply cannot put a price on strengthening and enriching the character of a child.
This year’s annual support campaign has a goal of raising $75,000. The Alleghany Highlands YMCA held its Monte Carlo Fundraiser Saturday and we were able to raise $3,000! Thank you to everyone who came out. I hope you had a fun time with the different games and contests. I know I especially enjoyed the horse races, the chicken dance, playing heads or tails and playing for the $1,000 reverse raffle. Thank you for supporting the YMCA scholarship program by opening up your hearts and wallets.
Thank you to Sankar Enterprises for working with us to provide rooms for our out of town guests. Thank you to One Stop Sign Shop for making the banner and sponsor signs for us. Thank you to the Mountain View Restaurant for hosting the event. The staff did an amazing job.
This event would not have been possible if it were not for the support of local businesses, organizations and individuals who sponsored the event.
Our lead “Blue Chip” sponsors were: Alleghany Regional Hospital, Highlands Community Bank, Jackson River Internists, MeadWestvaco, Mountain View Restaurant, Sankar Enterprises.
Our “Red Chip” sponsors were: Jackson River Surgical Specialists, One Stop Sign Shop, Owen’s Pharmacy, Shentel.
Our “White Chip” sponsors were: Alleghany Motors Inc., Arritt Funeral Home, Big Ridge LLC, Commonwealth Contracting, First National Bank, JenFab Inc., William J. Withrow CPA, Virginia Highlands Radiology.

Our “Stage Prize” sponsors were: Cafe Michel, Covington Tire Company, Fire and Light Gallery, Hannah’s Hideaway, Hidden Cottage, Homestead, Jackson River Gallery, Rider’s Up! Outfitters, and Tri-County Furniture.
The YMCA is blessed to have such great partners in the community who support the mission “to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.”
As with any event, there are behind the scenes heroes who make things happen. The YMCA is blessed to have staff and volunteers who give of their time, talent and treasure. Special thanks to Jim Ballou, Teresa Hammond, Larry Schoppmeyer, Sandra Lewis, Gayle Kitchen and Rebecca O’Conner for serving on the planning committee and spending many hours pulling the event together. Thank you to Bill Wade for serving as the DJ and making the event so festive!
The YMCA has already received funds from the Alleghany Foundation and with this event we are closer to our goal, but we still have more work to do. To ensure that no one is denied a chance to participate because of the inability to pay, we need your help. A donation, no matter how big or small, can help make the difference in the lives of a member of our community. One hundred percent of the donations go to members in need. By working together, we can give more kids the opportunity to grow strong in spirit, mind, and body.
If you would like to make a contribution, please contact the YMCA at 540-962-9622.
Sincerely,
Gwen Bagley
