CHRISTIANSBURG (AP) – Authorities say a driver who was pursued by police from Christiansburg into Montgomery County was fatally shot after the motorist threatened a child in the car and attempted to back over officers.
The Montgomery Sheriff’s Office said Thursday the deputy involved in the shooting is on paid administrative leave during an investigation.
Neither the deputy nor the driver who was killed have been identified.
The sheriff’s department said it assisted Christiansburg police during the vehicle pursuit shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday. The pursued vehicle crashed into another vehicle during the chase.
The Roanoke Times reports the shooting victim was a man holding his daughter hostage.
Virginia State Police are conducting the investigation.
