HINTON, W.Va. – The Covington boys basketball team avenged an early season loss at home to Summers County by beating the Bobcats on their home floor, 60-55.
Covington had an 11-point lead in the third quarter, but the Bobcats applied pressure in the fourth quarter to cut the Cougars lead to single digits.
Covington’s Chad Lipes and Keenan Smith both knocked down a pair of free throws at the line in the final minute to seal the Cougars win.
Michael Myers paced the Cougars with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Dominique Jordan, Lipes and James Hunter added nine points each.
Smith dished out seven assists in the win, while Aaron Fertig had five assists.
Ryne Nahodil led the Bobcats with 16 points. Touron McKinney and Scott Hannah scored 10 points each.
“The biggest thing was free throws,” said Covington coach Rob Bennett.
“We won the game at the free throw line. Keenan (Smith) sealed the win for us when he hit two big free throws in the final 20 seconds of the game.”
Covington (4-5, 1-0) will be back in action Wednesday at Highland at 7 p.m.
