VINTON - Leonard Merrett Driscoll, 82, of Vinton, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 2009, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Born June 28, 1927, in Buena Vista, he was a son of the late Augustine and Gertrude Driscoll.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his angel, Paula Evans Driscoll.
Mr. Driscoll etired after 30 years of service with the Virginia State Police and was a proud member of the U.S. States Navy, serving on the US Sangamon during World War II. Leonard was well known for his many stories, his smile, his love of family, and his devotion to God and church. He had resided in Charlottesville, Raleigh, N.C., Charleston, S.C., Nashville, Tenn. and most recently, Vinton.
Surviving are four children, Steve Driscoll and wife, Donna, of Richmond, Anita Proffitt and husband, Bruce, of Covington, Lori Dixon and husband, Chris, of Vinton, and Shawn Driscoll and girlfriend, Susan Walters, of Virginia Beach; a sister, Marion Best, of Greensboro, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Todd Driscoll, Tracie Royster, Dana Scheetz, Elizabeth Dixon, Heidi Dixon, Courtney Proffitt and Jennifer Robinson; six great-grandchildren, Clark Driscoll, Cole Driscoll, Riley Royster, Jason Scheetz Jr., Bradley Scheetz and Blake Robinson; several special nieces and nephews; and his beloved chocolate Lab, Lucy.
A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Bill Booth officiating. Interment followed in Green Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Virginia State Police Benevolent Fund, or Aversboro Road Baptist Church, 1600 Aversboro Rd., Garner, N.C. 27529.
The family received friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Home, Buena Vista.
