Mrs. Sarah Shires Bostic Young, age 75, of 611 Addams Street, died Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at Alleghany Regional Hospital, Low Moor. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Elwood T. Bostic and her second husband, Rev. John LeRoy Young, Jr.
Mrs. Young was born August 14, 1934 in Ronceverte, WV, the daughter of the late Omer Earl Shires, Sr. and Nina Hefner Shires. She retired from Alleghany County School System where she worked as cafeteria manager for twenty-three years and taught for six years in the Computer Lab in Central School. Mrs. Young was a member of Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church and a longtime member of the choir. Sarah was known throughout the area for her numerous hours of volunteer work; she also served on and later led several mission work teams including two in Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico and Oklahoma among others. She was member and current president of the Retired Teachers Association, a member of TAP, COPE, Hunters for the Hungry, Jackson River Enterprises, and Habitat for Humanity.
Mrs. Young is survived by three sons and a daughter, Gordon and Susan Bostic of Shrewsbury, NJ, Rebecca and Wayne Perkins, Jonathan and Ann Bostic, all of Covington, Timothy and Susan Bostic of Fincastle; two granddaughters, Rosalie Bostic of Shrewsbury, NJ and Katelyn Bostic of Fincastle; three grandsons, Benjamin Perkins of Staunton and Jonathan Bostic and wife, Sara, of Covington, and Kyle Bostic of Fincastle; four great grandchildren; a brother, Omer Shires, Jr. and wife, Pat of Clifton Forge; and a special friend, Thomas E. Ayers of Covington.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, January 9, 2010, at Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Barry Throckmorton officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. John T. Martin, Jr. and the Rev. Michael D. Copeland. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Kyle Bostic, Ben Perkins, Jonathan Bostic, David Ayers, Tommy Ayers, Tommy Alfred, Doug Shires and Freddie Lacks. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of TAP.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church and at other times at the residence, 611 Addams Street, Covington.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Jackson River Enterprises, ATTN: Sharon Walthall, 825 W. Edgemont Drive, Covington, VA 24426.
