Deacon Howard Jefferson Crump, 94, of White Sulphur Springs entered into eternal rest and glory on January 2, 2010.

Born into this life on April 24, 1915, he was a son of the late James F. Crump and mother, Louie Fisher Mann Crump.

Mr. Crump was employed at the Greenbrier Hotel for 51 years as a bellman, mail carrier, and boot black. Brother Crump belonged to King Hiram #7 Lodge of Lewisburg, WV as 33rd Degree Mason and past worshipful master. He was a member of the Shriners Temple Ramaden-Harlem Hershts 127,a lifetime member of the Eastern Stars, was a lifetime member and the oldest surviving member of the First Baptist Church in White Sulphur Springs, senior Deacon Emeritus of Deacon Board, past Superintendent of Sunday School, member of the senior choir, past minister of music, member of Trustee Board and other offices. He was also a leader of the mid-week prayer service.

Brother Crump was past president and founding and lifetime member of NAACP Board, a member of Martin Luther King Day Committee, past Grand Marshall of WV State Hilltop Convention. An inspiration to bring, then Grand Marshall spoke at 1st Baptism 2nd Sunday in June 1992 as well as many others; “To God Be The Glory.” He received the WV most outstanding Citizen Award, and helped with the National Civil Rights Movement. He helped to organize a union at the Greenbrier Hotel-AFL-CIO. Brother Crump was a member of the Crump Brothers Quartet, a member of the community of Black History held on Feb. 26, 1994 at Bolling High School.

Preceding him to heaven other than his parents, were his siblings; brothers; Earnest and Homer Mann, James, Clarence, Ashby, and Norman Crump, and one sister; Sirlistal Crump.

His survivors include his daughter poet; Wednesday Ann Scott, the son he never had; James Dale Mann and wife Kayla Levone, also his caregivers, all from White Sulphur Springs, WV, nieces; Barbara(Nathaniel) Johnson, Audrey Crump, Marva Wesley, Celeste (Michael) Coy, Maxine Crump, nephews; Donald(Joyce) Crump, LaFone(Renee) Crump of North Carolina, as well as 19 grand and great nieces, 38 great nephews, as well as a host of clergy friends.

The funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at Rhema Christian Center in Fairlea, WV, with Rev. Greg Scott officiating. Burial will follow in Greenhill Cemetery, White Sulphur Springs. Visitation will be on Tuesday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. with Masonic Service at 6:45 p.m.

Family will receive friends at 57 Circle Lane at the home of James Dale & Kayla Mann at anytime.

Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, is serving the family.
