COVINGTON – Make it four wins in a row for Covington following a 10-4 Valley Baseball League victory over Waynesboro on July 6th at Casey Field in Covington.

The Lumberjacks have been the hottest team in the VBL following the All-Star break where they’ve won their first three games and carried a momentous win over prior to the break.

Thomas Marsala (4-for-5) had a huge performance for Covington in the win as the outfielder out of Hinds Community College collected four hits in five bats, including three doubles, while also leading the way with four RBI’s. Marsala also snagged his fifth stolen base of the season.

Covington collected 13 hits in the win. Chenar Brown (2-for-3), and Spencer Williams (2-for-4) each added a pair of hits, while Brown collected three RBI’s and Williams added two.

It was a relatively tight game through the first three innings. Waynesboro struck first in the top of the 1st inning before Covington scored two in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. It would be a lead the Lumberjacks would relinquish the rest of the way.

The Jacks’ would score a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning to build a three-run lead on RBIs from Marsala and Williams. The Generals though would come back the next top inning during the third and got a pair of runs back.

The game itself would break open for Covington in the bottom of the fourth inning where Brown, Williams, and Gregory Melo (1-for-5) each had RBIs as the Lumberjacks took a 7-3 lead.

With a lead intact, it was Covington’s bullpen who held the fort down for the Lumberjacks. Out of the bullpen Carlos Escobosa (W) and Jorge A. Garcia III combined to throw 4.2 shutout innings where they only gave up two hits. Escobosa, who was credited with the win, struck out two batters in 2.2 innings. Matthew Irwin started the game on the mound for the Jacks’ but finished with a no-decision after giving up four runs on five hits in 4.1 innings.

Kyle Neri (1-for-3) had a solo home run for Waynesboro, while Giovanni Arzuaga (L) suffered the loss after allowing four runs on three hits in just three innings.

Waynesboro 1 0 2 0 1 0 0 0 0 – 4 7 1
Covington 2 2 0 3 1 0 0 2 x – 10 13 2
W – Carlos Escobosa. L – Giovanni Arzuaga.
