CLIFTON FORGE - Ellen Ann Crawford Cox, 72, of 47 Granville Ave., Clifton Forge, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born Oct. 2, 1937, in Clifton Forge, a son of the late George K. and Erna Estell Akers Crawford.

She was a retired civilian registered nurse for the former Chesapeake and Ohio Hospital and also Andrews Air Force Base and the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. She was a member of First Christian Church Disciples of Christ, where she belonged to the Rose Tatum Circle. She was a member of the Widows Fellowship and was a supporter of Boy Scout Troop No. 2 of Clifton Forge. She devoted her life to her church and to helping others.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cox was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry P. Cox in 1966; a sister, Mary Shifflett Morris; and a brother, Robert Ryland Crawford.

She is survived by a daughter, Teresa A. Weikle and husband, Ashley, of Clifton Forge; a son, Michael K. Cox and wife, Cindy, of Lynchburg; two brothers, Carroll Ray Crawford and wife, Mary Lou, of Richmond and James Edward “Jimmy” Crawford and wife, Ricky, of Pleasant Hill, Calif.; two grandchildren, Graham Cox and Brian Cox; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends this evening from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, and other times at the residence, 47 Granville Ave, Clifton Forge.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 9 a.m. in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington.

The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Boy Scout Troop No. 2, in acre of Todd Tyler, 700 Granville Ave., Clifton Forge, Va. 24422, the Mountain Regional Hospice Volunteers, P.O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, Va. 24422, or the American Cancer Society, Alleghany Highlands Division, in care of Karen Buzzard, 807 McCormick Blvd., Clifton Forge, Va. 24422.
