Helen Arthur Benton, 90, of Hurt, went to be with her Lord on Friday, August 14, 2020 at Autumn Care in Altavista. She was born on June 4, 1930 in Cowen, West Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Dr. George Esley Arthur and Ada Sigman Arthur of Covington, Virginia.
Mrs. Benton was a retired schoolteacher and had taught 30 years at Altavista Elementary School and dearly loved all her students. She had attended the Valley View Church of God in Altavista. She spent most of her retirement in Covington surrounded by her friends and family.
She is survived by her daughter, Jill Benton Ward of Hurt; one grandson, Chad Ward and his wife Gwen of Swoope, Virginia; one granddaughter, Sarah Ward Dolan and her husband Jonathan of Vinton, Virginia; her four great grandson, Nolan, Alexander, Landon, and Jude; as well as her many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sisters, Betty Mattox of Hurt, Rose Cobb Critzer, Bethel Angus, and Dixie Angus of Cowen, West Virginia; as well as a very special niece, Robin Mattox Betterton of Hurt, Virginia.
In order to respect her wishes, Helen will be cremated and there will be a gathering to honor her life on Tuesday, August 18, 2020 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Finch and Finch in Altavista for family and friends.
