Virginia State Police have confirmed that two bodies were found Sunday in the charred remnants of a cabin that was destroyed by fire.
Smoke from the fire was spotted Sunday in a remote section of Natural Well in the Falling Spring area of Alleghany County.
At 2:34 p.m. Sunday, the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office requested Virginia State Police assistance with the investigation.
Corinne Geller, State Police public relations director, said the structure, an old cabin, was destroyed in the fire.
The Falling Spring Fire Department responded to the scene, which was located off of Wil-Dan Road.
“Once the fire was extinguished, a set of human remains were discovered inside the structure,” she said.
Both bodies were transported to the state medical examiner’s office in Roanoke for examination, autopsy and positive identification.
The investigation is being led by the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Salem Field Office.
