Betty Joyce Huggard Shepard
Betty Joyce Huggard Shepard passed away peacefully on June 1, 2023. A longtime resident of Selma and a lifetime member of Selma Epworth United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bill Shepard, Sr. of 71 years, her parents Bill and Annie Huggard and siblings Charles Huggard, Connie Woodall, GiGi Worley, Kenneth Huggard and Freddy Huggard.
Left to cherish her memory are her sister Libby Bernhardt (Jim); her sons Billy Shepard (Kim), Jay Shepard (Sharon), her daughter Blair Graninger; her grandchildren, Stephanie Laos, Josh Shepard (Sam), Hayley Shepard, Katie Shepard, Christopher Shepard (Blake), Andy Shepard (Analea) and Annie Graninger; and her great-grandchildren, Aiden Laos, Maguire Shepard, Monroe Shepard and Bentley Shepard; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
Betty graduated with her RN from the C & O Hospital in 1950. Her career spanned over the years into industrial nursing with HO Canfield, Pantasote and retiring with Alleghany Regional Hospital. She served as past president and other supporting roles with the Virginia chapter of the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses. Though retired, she corrected her caregivers often that she was still a nurse up to the point of her passing. Over the years, she served her church on several committees, as a Sunday school teacher, United Methodist Women, choir member and many more. Remember Betty for her selfless love for her family, friends and church. Her commitment to helping those in need and her beautiful smile welcomed everyone she met.
Our family thanks and appreciates everyone at The Springs Nursing Center of Hot Springs for the care and compassion provided for her. A special thanks to Nicely Funeral Home and their staff for their care and support. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Selma Epworth United Methodist Church (PO Box 190, Selma, VA 24474). A celebration of life will take place at Selma Epworth United Methodist Church, at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 10, 2023, with Pastor Greg Stenson officiating. Her family will receive friends beginning at 10 a.m. prior to the service. The United Methodist Women will provide a luncheon immediately after the service.
