LOW MOOR, Va. (VR) – The Alleghany Highlands YMCA will kick off the summer season with its Welcome Summer Bash.
This annual celebration is scheduled for Saturday, June 10, from 1-9 p.m. and will feature a car show, motorcycle cruise-in, live music, a community yard sale and baked goods silent auction.
This event is free to the public and will conclude with fireworks display shortly after dusk, sponsored by River Retreat.
“We’re planning a fun-filled day with activities for everyone,” said Jennifer Unroe, Alleghany Highlands YMCA CEO. “Please, come out and join us for this very special event.”
The car show, featuring the Alleghany Cruisers, will be held from 1-4 p.m. with a motorcycle cruise-in and bike show to follow. The Fender Benders will be providing live music. Other activities will include cornhole, outdoor volleyball and horseshoes.
There will be a Glow Night in the Pool. Participants can build their own pool noodle horse, and a Belmont Triple Crown stick horse race will be held. Other activities will include a water balloon toss and much more.
Openings remain for vendors. To reserve a space, email Alleghany Highlands YMCA health and wellness director and event coordinator Michael May at mmayahymca@gmail.com or call him at 540-862-8678.
“We thank all of our wonderful vendors in advance,” May said. “Without their assistance, this event would not be possible.”
The YMCA is still accepting donations for the community yard sale and baked goods silent auction. Proceeds from these portions of the Welcome Summer Bash will benefit the YMCA’s Early Learning Centers.
YMCA staff will accept perishable items such as pastries, plants or a home-cooked dish. Items such as these can be dropped off on Friday, June 9, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., and Saturday, June 10, between 8 a.m. and noon.
For nonperishable items, the YMCA will accept antiques, books, lightweight furniture, appliances, toys, baby items, DVDs, CDs and household goods/home décor items. These donations can be dropped off at the YMCA anytime between June 5 and June 9 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. No clothing will be accepted.
For anyone who wants to set up their own yard sale, there will be a $10 charge for non-members and a $5 charge for YMCA members. If anyone needs a table, they can reserve one between June 5 and June 9. There will be a $5 charge.
“We think our community yard sale will be a star attraction of the Welcome Summer Bash,” said Damona Jackson, human resources director for the Alleghany Highlands YMCA and an organizer of the event. “Plus, we’re looking for some extra special items for our baked goods silent auction.”
Since its inception, the Alleghany Highlands YMCA has provided a variety of youth and family programs along with expanded memberships and services into all of the Alleghany Highlands communities. For more information on the YMCA, call 540-962-9622.
