Lewisburg, WV – Retired NBA Player Tamar Slay will bring Slay Basketball camp to Lewisburg and the surrounding areas from June 26th – June 28th at Lewisburg Baptist Academy. This is a skilled player development camp for boys and girls, ages 8-16 (up to 12th grade welcome). Slay staff including retired coaches, professional trainers, and high school and college players will teach proper basketball skill development and focus on proper technique in all areas. Campers will be organized into groups and teams according to their age and ability with officiated games and competitions. The camp will be held from 9 AM- 3 PM each day.
Slay is a native of Beckley, WV, and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. He helped lead Woodrow to two state AAA basketball championships. He earned a scholarship and attended Marshall University after high school where he was a prominent standout and became a Marshall University Hall of Famer.
He was selected in the 2002 NBA draft by the New Jersey Nets where he played for three seasons and on to International Basketball leagues playing mostly for teams in Italy. After 12 successful years of professional basketball, Slay retired and decided to use his talents, knowledge, and experience to help others bring their game to the next level.
Slay remained active in the NBA with the Players Association and boot camps, as well as the NBPA Leadership Training Program and NBPA Top 100 Coaching Program. His background has given him a passion for youth and sparked his development of Slay Basketball outside of Charlotte, NC. Slay Basketball averages 90-100 kids per week in development programs and runs over 16 Under Armour Circuit teams. Slay also led a high school team in North Carolina to win the state basketball championship. Slay feels that God gave him the gifts and talents to help others in the area of basketball.
At this camp, you will learn firsthand from one of West Virginia’s finest, who remains invested in developing youth. You will receive education on teamwork, respect, confidence, and discipline; all skills required to excel in basketball and take the sport to the next level.
“Most of the time, youth basketball players have to travel out of the area for basketball camp and development. A camp of this caliber to be held locally is special for the area and we are looking forward to hosting Slay Basketball in June and welcoming the community to Lewisburg Baptist Academy’s Gymnasium.” Jonathan Comer, Pastor of Lewisburg Baptist Church.
