Mrs. Nancy Cahoon “Hank” Gilbert, age 95, of Covington, died Tuesday, December 1, 2020, at her residence. She was the wife of the late Jack Lee Gilbert who preceded her in death in 1980.
Mrs. Gilbert was born July 18, 1925 in Clifton Forge, the daughter of the late Jess Norman Cahoon and Ann Walquist Cahoon.
After attending both Mary Washington and Roanoke College, Nancy started her teaching career in the Covington School System where she taught at Jeter. She then went on to teach students in the Alleghany School System before retiring from Boiling Spring as a third grade teacher. Mrs. Gilbert was a member of Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church and the Philathea Sunday School Class. Nancy enjoyed gardening and was a life member of the Virginia Federation Garden Club.
Mrs. Gilbert is survived by her son, Jon Walquist Gilbert and wife, Sally; two grandchildren, Anne E. Gilbert of Baltimore, MD and Neil A. Gilbert and Mooresville, NC; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Gilbert was preceded in death by two sisters, Catherine C. Calder and Eleanor C. Burns.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M Saturday, December 5, 2020 at Alleghany Memorial Park with Rev. Sung Yoo officiating.
The family suggests that memorial contributions take the form of contributions to Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church, 425 W. Main Street, Covington, VA 24426.
