At its annual meeting on Sunday, April 16, the Alleghany Historical Society elected new officers for the 2023-2024 year.
The backdrop for the attached photograph is gears from a paper machine that was part of Westvaco and is only a part of the information available about an industry that has been so important to the area, since it began in 1899 as West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company.
There is a lot of excitement in the air at the Historical Society, especially all the displays that have been put in place at The Alleghany Highlands Industrial Heritage and Technology Discovery Center. There are many new items, including a display being created to explore the fiber and film industry of the area. This includes Hercules, Industrial Rayon and Covington Silk and Weaving Company.
The Depot is working hard on a new display featuring Covington High School as it concludes its final year as CHS. Donations have been made to showcase the school from 1912 until today and honoring some of the key figures over the years. The Historical Society will be hosting an open house on May 13 from 1-4 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
Please, support the Historical Society and its two locations at the Discovery Center and The Depot during the Give Local Alleghany campaign May 23.
