LOW MOOR, Va. (VR) – 10-0.
Ten games, 10 wins, no losses.
The Alleghany Mountaineers (10-0) varsity baseball team is cruising.
Even in a close one on Friday night, it was right-hander Anthony Webb (W/1-for-3) who stole the show as he pitched a gem for the Mountaineers when he went the distance, pitching a complete-game shutout over the visiting Carroll County Cavaliers in Low Moor on Friday night.
The Mountaineers, who prevailed 3-0, were backed by Webb who had held the Cavaliers to four hits in his seven innings of work, where he struck out four and walked just one batter. At the plate, Webb helped himself out by driving in a run during the team’s two-run third inning which had proved to be more than enough to get the win. The win for Webb improved his pitching record to 4-0 on the season, matching his teammate, Halen Lowman.
While Webb was phenomenal on the mound, the defense that backed him was just as phenomenal, as the put together an errorless performance.
The Mountaineers’ offense, much like the Cavaliers’ offense, was held to just four hits. Webb did not have a ton of run support, as the Mountaineers were 4-for-21 at the plate as a team, but they grabbed runs in key moments of the game all while holding the Cavaliers in a pivotal Three Rivers District meeting.
Along with Webb, Wyatt Griffith (0-for-1) and Hunter DePriest (1-for-2) each had RBIs. Griffith brought in the game’s first run in the third inning, as he walked on a 3-2 count. Meanwhile, DePriest drove in an insurance third run for the team during the sixth inning on a triple with no outs. DePriest, Webb, Conner McPeek (1-for-3) and Chris Harden (1-for-3) all had one hit apiece.
Lance Burnett (L) suffered the loss for the Cavaliers, as he gave up three runs (all earned) on three while walking six but did strike out seven. M. Lyons (1-for-3), C. Dalton (1-for-3), J. Meredith (1-for-3) and M. Crockett (1-for-2) each had hits.
The Mountaineers will look to make it 11 in a row on Tuesday, as the team hosts the James River Knights.
