COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – On April 19, Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding a dog running at large that appeared to have its chain pulled loose in the Paynes Grade area of Alleghany County. A deputy responded to the area and encountered the dog running at large with the chain still attached.
The animal bared its teeth and attacked and bit the deputy twice, violently shaking him. The deputy attempted to use his extendable baton but was unable to do so because of the extreme aggressiveness of the dog. Therefore, the deputy discharged his firearm at the animal and the animal subsequently passed.
The Virginia State Police was contacted to investigate the incident and refused due to the fact they do not investigate use of force on animals. Therefore, the body camera footage and subsequent incident report will be turned over to the Alleghany County Commonwealth attorney.
