Recently, while a group of Ruritans from the Sharon Club did a spring cleaning of the clubhouse, another group completed a trash pickup activity on the “old” Route 60 North Mountain stretch in the very eastern part of Alleghany County.
One would assume that the road is seldom used since Interstate 64 parallels the old road. However, each year the Ruritans collect numerous bags of trash including cans and bottles, paper products and even discarded pieces of clothing, tires and furniture. Now the smaller road looks very nice and ready for beautiful spring weather.
This is just one activity completed by the Ruritan Club to improve the eastern section of the county. Many activities involve help given to individuals in the community, such as providing cost-free Medical Alert Phones to individuals. The Ruritans are always available to help, and contact may be made through President Mike Layton or Secretary Linda Rumpf Archer at 434-609-2968)
The club also is interested in new members who will be available to undertake activities within the community, as well as monthly meetings at the Sharon Club House on Nicelytown Road. Give them a call for more information.
