Alleghany County Public Schools returned to 100 percent virtual classes Monday.
County schools, along with other districts in Southwest Virginia, continue to deal with the rising increase in COVID-19 cases.
“Alleghany County Public Schools has been working diligently to provide a safe and effective learning environment for our staff and students,” acting Superintendent Sherman Callahan said. “Because of increased cases and out of safety and supported guidance from the Virginia Department of Health, Alleghany County Public Schools will operate all schools on a 100 percent virtual/remote learning schedule beginning Monday, Dec. 14, through Tuesday, Dec. 22.”
Schools are closed, with no instruction, on Dec. 23 through Jan. 1 for the holidays. Schools will tentatively resume in-person instruction on the established hybrid/blended learning plan on Monday, Jan. 4.
This tentative return will be dependent on guidance and/or current data closer to that date.
“Again, no students will attend school, as all learning will be done 100 percent virtually/remotely,” Callahan reiterated.
Parents may continue to monitor student progress by accessing their PowerSchool accounts, as has been the practice.
During the remote learning period, all schools will continue to be extensively cleaned.
Food service will continue during the 100 percent remote learning period. Grab-n-go meals will be provided to all children age 18 and under at various locations on Monday, Wednesday and Friday through Dec. 21. All schools will have meals (two unitized breakfasts and lunches) available for pick up on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Meal service will operate on the school calendar schedule.
Meals will not be provided on inclement weather days or closures due to emergency.
