The Alleghany Mountaineers (6-3, 0-1) dropped their Three Rivers District opener on Tuesday to the visiting Radford Bobcats (6-1, 1-0) 59-43.
The final score is nothing short of how the game faired overall for the Mountaineers who battled with the Bobcats all game long and even led by a point (21-20) going into the second half.
The third quarter proved to be the game-changer. With the score tied at 23-23, the Bobcats went on a 10-2 scoring run which built themselves a 33-25 lead.
As the Bobcats were building their lead, the Mountaineers tough defense put together several stops in a row to cut the lead down to 33-31. The run for the Mountaineers was led by Xzavier Hayslett and Eli Entsminger who knocked down a pair of layups, while Hayslett had a rebound a steal as well during the run.
Despite the momentum heading the Mountaineers way, the Bobcats would bounce right back to close the third quarter on an 11-2 run to take a 44-33 lead. Gavin Cormany hit a three-pointer that closed the quarter out.
The Bobcats outscored the Mountaineers 38-23 in the second half.
Hayslett and Entsminger led the way in scoring for the Mountaineers. Hayslett dropped in a team-high 13 points, while Entsminger added 11.
Leading the Bobcats to their teams sixth victory was Elijah Kelly who scored a game-high 28 points, while Cormany wasn’t far behind him with 23.
The Mountaineers were back home last night as part of a triple-header as the JV, varsity, and girls varsity teams hosted Floyd County.
