Great Throng Sees Christmas Tree Exercises
Over a thousand people witnessed the holding of the community Christmas Tree exercises at the Courthouse here yesterday afternoon at 5:30 o’clock. Choirs from all the city churches, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and several other organizations, took part in the exercises. The stockings and gifts for the poor children of the city formally presented at the exercises will be distributed to the different homes today. The tableaux were well received and regarded as excellent interpretations of the biblical scenes.

Russians Urge Special Disarmament Parley
The Soviet government called today for a special session of the United Nations or an international conference to discuss disarmament. Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei A. Gromyko said disarmament talks could pave the way for an East-West summit conference.

Senate Still Battling Gas Tax
The House has gone home for Christmas, leaving behind an exhausted Senate held hostage by a test of wills over a proposed nickel-a-gallon boost in the federal gasoline tax. Majority Leader Howard H. Baker Jr., of Tenn., vowed to bring the measure to a final vote, but Sen. Jesse Helms, R-N.C., was just as steadfast in his determination to prevent that.

Budget Proposal Includes $1.2 Billion Cuts, Savings
The budget Gov. Mark R. Warner submitted Friday proposes about $450 million in cuts and nearly $750 million in savings, fund transfers and use of fund reserves, yet increases money available for public schools. After ordering 1,837 layoffs in his Oct. 15 cuts, his budget will require only about 87 additional job cuts phased in over several months, administration officials said.

Callaghan Carolers
Forty-two Residents of the Callaghan area gathered Thursday night and visited homes of elderly residents and sang Christmas carols. Following the caroling, the group stopped at Fletcher Chapel for refreshments and crafts.
