Isn’t it exciting?
The week before Christmas, I am hoping everyone is in a happy, festive mood.
There are parades, and parties, and celebrations. It often seems as if there is more to do than there is time to do it. And that, too, can be considered fun.
For kids, and folks with families, there’s the excitement of what you might get from Santa or someone else. And, the excitement of what someone else’s face might look like when they open the gift you shopped so carefully for.
There’s the wrapping of the gifts. I cannot get excited about that in the least. I am not a good wrapper. I’m not even a mediocre wrapper. In truth, wrapping juts me right out of a good mood and sometimes all the way into a snit. Once, I even managed to tape together the fingers of my right hand! Thank heavens someone invented the gift bag. Gift bags come in all sizes, so they’re good for almost anything. Other than, say, a pony. Or a car.
Since I am neither giving or getting a pony, or a car, I’m good to go, there.
Not that I’d mind a pony, as long as it weighs more than I do. And, I certainly wouldn’t care one whit about a big red bow if someone were to gift me a car. I could use a new(er) car, so anyone who is contemplating giving me one, please take note. No red bow necessary.
I am very excited about Christmas this week, and the truth is, I don’t think I’m getting even one gift. No matter! I’m sure I’ll eat well.
And that brings up the aspect of food. Christmas food! Out to dinner, or home at the dining room table, the food will be fantastic in the week to come. I wish more places were open for Christmas dinner, but then, that would mean chefs and servers would have to work on the holiday. And there’s nothing happy about that.
Christmas means there may be snow! In fact, some is called for in the coming days. I know just what will happen: It will be too snowy and the roads to dangerous for my sister and me to drive to the Cat & Owl for dinner Friday night. That’s why I plan to go to Bartley’s and splurge on a tenderloin steak. It’s my gift to myself. And, should we actually be able to get down to the C&O and back, well, I’ll have a steak in the fridge for Christmas dinner. I will read while I eat it alone, and then watch “Love, Actually,” one of my favorite Christmas movies, along with “The Bishop’s Wife.” Hey – maybe they’ll both be on. Merry Christmas to me!
I rarely drink, but I find myself craving spiked eggnog, or maybe Bailey’s Irish Crème. Perhaps I’ll splurge on one of those, too.
I went to a fab house party last Friday night. I didn’t want to drive at night on perhaps icy roads, but I talked myself into it. I am so glad I did! There were great people, a gracious host, and an absolutely darling dog who likes to party. The next afternoon, I went to see “Frosty!” a musical presented at the high school by the Barter Theatre Players. It was fantastic!
Oh, the week before a holiday. There are so many fun, exciting things to do. You just gotta love it!
Merry Christmas to all!
