Christmas Seal Receipts To Be Spent Locally
All receipts from the sale of Christmas Seals in the county, will be spent here in Alleghany, according to Mrs. C.P. Jones, chairman of the campaign. Fifty-five percent of the receipts will be used for holding clinics, employing specialists and public health nurses. The other 45 percent will be used to care for patients and aid them in securing hospital treatment, and also to help families where the breadwinner is unable to care for them, on account of illness from tuberculosis.

Worst Is Over In Subway Strike
The worst is over for New York City’s embattled subway straphangers, says the chairman of the Transit Authority. But striking motormen, relentless in demands for representation in bargaining with the authority, today carried their walkout into its fourth day as a cold wave settled over the city.

Cosmonauts Land After 211 Days
Two Soviet cosmonauts returned to a heroes’ welcome and were reported “feeling well” after completing history’s longest space flight, a 211-day odyssey in orbit. The 40-year-old spacemen, Anatoly Berezove and Valentin Lebedev, returned safely to Earth Friday night.

Freezing Rain Causes Power Outages, Delays
Freezing rain in western and northern Virginia early Wednesday caused widespread power outages, school closings, flight cancellations and traffic accidents. The inclement weather moved into the state overnight and left about a quarter-inch of ice in many areas by mid-morning.

Woods Win MeadWestvaco Christmas Card Contest
In photo below, Monica Woods, right, is the winner of the 2007 MeadWestvaco Christmas Card Contest. Becky Johnson, left, the Covington mill’s communications manager, displays Wood’s winning entry. Wood received a monetary prize for winning the annual Christmas card contest, and her artwork appears on more than 1.900 Christmas cards being sent out by Mark George, vice president of Covington operations. The annual competition is sponsored by the Alleghany Highlands Arts and Crafts Center in Clifton Forge and MeadWestvaco.
