It was a rough start to the Covington Lady Cougars varsity basketball season last week.
Following their season opening loss at home to rival Alleghany, the Lady Cougars dropped two more home games last week to Riverheads Gladiators and the Pocahontas County Warriors.
The Lady Cougars fell to the Gladiators 45-30.
Despite a tightly played first half in which the Lady Cougars only trailed by six points, the Gladiators started to pull away early in the second half as they built a double-digit lead that they would not let go of.
The Lady Cougars were led by Lauren Bragg who scored a team-high 13 points, while Alexus Wall added 10.
In their final game of the week, the Warriors cruised to a 55-30 victory over the Lady Cougars.
The Cougars saw a slim early lead evaporate in the first quarter as the Warriors scored 15 straight points to end the first quarter as they built a 17-6 lead.
The Warriors lead would get as high as 15 points by the end of the first half where they led the Cougars 25-10.
Trailing by double-digits, the Cougars would see their deficit grow as the third quarter progressed as the Warriors built a 20-point lead.
The Warriors were led by Olivia Vandevender who dropped a game-high 27 points
Bragg and Wall each scored nine points for the Cougars, while Bragg recorded 10 rebounds.
