Ladies To Meet With Council
A committee of ladies interested in the construction of underground crossings of the C&O Railroad, at Bath and Monroe streets, is expected to attend the meeting of the City Council to be held Monday night. The question is one in which a great deal of interest has been manifested, owing to the continual use of the crossing by children going to and from school, and of the danger involved to traffic generally, as both of the crossings are in the heart of the business section of the city.

Moves To Speed Scientific Effort
President Eisenhower has moved to tighten White House coordination of the U.S. effort to speed scientific and technological progress. The White House announced yesterday that the 12-member Science Advisory Committee, organized initially under the Office of Defense Mobilization, will work directly with the White House hereafter.

Bomb Sent To Thatcher Explodes
A letter-bomb exploded today inside Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s 10 Downing St. official residence, slightly scorching the man who opened it, Scotland Yard said. But the parcel went off “nowhere near the prime minister who was in her office at the time,” press officer Gordon Shepherd said.

President Bush Cuts Pay Raises
Federal workers will get a smaller pay raise next month because President Bush is freezing part of the increase citing a national emergency because of the fight against terrorism. Bush’s decision is yet another blow to the civilian federal workforce, which has been the target of sweeping changes in the government bureaucracy.

Covington-Hot Springs Rotary Club Honors Retirees
Two retired members of the Covington-Hot Springs Rotary Club were honored during the Nov. 8 meeting held at Court Street Restaurant. David Minter of Covington, left, and John Trimble, right, of Hot Springs, were active in the club until their recent retirement. David joined in 1959 and John in 1961. Their service in Rotary was reviewed by club members Bill Wilson and Claire Collins. Minter, Trimble, Collins and Wilson are all past presidents of the club which serves Alleghany and Bath counties and the City of Covington.
