The weather was picture perfect and all those in attendance had a wonderful time making their own individual memories. The amount of work was astronomical but was certainly worth it. It was a special day for all as we said goodbye to the end of an era. Cougar pride will live on forever.
Friday night’s events began this special celebration with the debut of the Alumni Band conducted by Earl Shaffer. Great job putting this one together, Julie Stanley. Special memories were brought back to those alumni who played Onward Cougars one last time on Casey Field surrounded by flags, rifles and batons. The cheerleaders were pretty agile, and the alumni choir, directed by Alan Tucker, was in fine voice in the singing of the National Anthem, Onward Cougars and the Alma Mater. The re-run for the cheerleaders, band, rifles, flags and majorettes and the choir was a thrilling experience that they thought would never happen again.
It was a special night for Covington High School. The football team played exceptionally against Narrows. It was HALL OF FAME night. What a treat for all those in attendance as they introduced this year’s recipients. Those recipients were Brad Morton, Mary Tyree, Ricky Ray, Neil Huffman, Richard Brown, Langon Burns, Ronald Holloway, James Lewis “Wacky” Davis III, Mark Weiss, Charity Hale, Gene Huffman, J.P. Hostetter, Keith Twitty, Darlene Stewart, Adaryl Pooh Twitty, Gary Wayne Twitty, Wade Leech and Caprice (Laws) Reynolds. The reunion committee would like to thank recipient, Gary Twitty for all his assistance in helping us with our displays inside CHS.
The Alleghany Historical Society displayed books of the area and memorabilia of Covington High School. We certainly appreciate Floyd Harrison for his help with this. The Alleghany Highlands Genealogical Society had wonderful displays of CHS memorabilia and lots of yearbooks through the ages. Thanks to Donna Miller-Dressler there was a repeating loop of Charles Hammond photos. Donna and her team did a great job again. We are beyond grateful for the extensive fun addition.
High school tours were given by the CHS staff and volunteers, and the crowds were on hand to take one last stroll down memory lane before the high school becomes Covington Middle School. Time marches on.
Susan Crowder and Rylee Reynolds gave us one last balloon arch. We applaud you. Blue and gold were the colors of the day making it a special festive setting for all alumni in attendance.
We were so glad to have some early alumni from 1942, 1945 and 1947. All at one table!! Thank you to, Glenna Lipes (1942), Betty Snead Fitzgerald (1945) and Dolly Whitehead (1947) for joining us. What a tribute to the Cougars.
“Fabulous day – amazing weekend. Thankful for all the people behind the scenes – pulling this event off, not once, but two times!! (Susan Scott Crowder and JT Stanley). For those that were able to attend this weekend, it was great to see the Cougar Pride alive! We reminisced as we walked the halls of CHS, I was able to perform with the alumni band and color guard last night, and then, help lead the pep rally today with fellow cheerleaders (the knee handled it well!!)” Facebook post from Lori Brown Drumheller (October 15th)
Without the help of our Covington Cougar Village all giving time, talent, hard work, effort and Cougar love this celebration would not have been possible. Smiles and tears! Onward Cougars!
