Our dear, departed Horton, the long-time editor and publisher of this newspaper, used to have a column called “This and That.”
This Wednesday, the deadline for this column, came and went without a single idea for a new column. This is the bane of all columnists: Sometimes, there doesn’t seem to be anything new or special to write about. And, that’s where I find myself this week.
Thus, you’re getting a “This and That.”
I could write about the weather … again. But then, everybody’s talking about our recent spate of cold, almost frigid weather. Tuesday morning, when I went to my car to – what else – drive to Covington, it was 31 degrees. At 11 a.m. That’s a heck of an adjustment from what we’ve been used to these past few months.
Do you often leave the house these days, and the first thing you think is, ‘I’m not dressed warmly enough’? That sure happened to me Tuesday. I had a turtleneck, a wool vest, and a seemingly cozy jacket. I even wore socks, which I’ve ignored in the sock drawer for months now. And still, I was too chilly.
I figured that would be okay. After all, I have heated seats, and a heater in the car. But, they seem to take a long time to get cranking these days.
Plus, I thought, it’s always warmer in Covington – usually 10 degrees warmer. I’d be okay, I figured. Well, I never warmed up the entire trip. I think the highest it got was 42.
I could write about the delightful turkey at the library. It’s made of folded paper, and is quite creative. Paula, who made it, drew my attention to it. The paper is from old books. It’s quite the showpiece. And, Paula was working on a folded paper Christmas tree while I was there. She’s very talented. Shoot – I can barely fold a letter into thirds in a perfect manner.
I could write about the Halloween decorations all around the town. Some are simply autumn related. I like those best. I’m not one for skeletons and ghosts. And, I don’t like the color orange. But still, I like to see it in a fall decoration.
Pumpkins were everywhere. I must say, though, the best and most wonderful fall decoration was an old blue truck parked in front of Crafty Ladies on Valley Ridge Road. It is piled with fall-related stuff. It’s the kind of thing you almost have to pull over in order to fully admire. Good work, Crafty Ladies!
Because my go-to lunch place was inexplicably closed when I got to Low Moor, I was at a loss for where to eat. That’s not a good place to be when you’re hungry.
But, the big, new gas station at Low Moor had fuel priced 12 cents less than anywhere else. So, I filled up the car there. And then I saw the sign for Subway.
Am I the only person who has never grabbed a sandwich from Subway? Perhaps so.
Nonetheless, I went in. The place was bright, clean and empty. The lady behind the counter fixed me a made to order sandwich. When I got home and scarfed it down, it was delicious! So, I’ve got a new go-to place, if and when I need it.
Ah. A few discoveries. A pleasant trip. A little of “this.” And a little of “that.” I gotta love it!
