For the 40th and final time, the Alleghany Mountaineers (3-0) and Covington Cougars (0-3) met on the football field Friday night at a well packed Mountaineer Field.
The Mountaineers for the first time since 2017, brought home the Brackman Cup following a 30-6 victory over the Cougars.
Garrett Via, who was coming off of a five touchdown performance against Bath County in which tied the school record with Terrell Givens for most rushing touchdowns in a single game, put together another record breaking night this time around against the Cougars. Via on 30 carries rushed for 312 yard which broke the Brackman Cup Game record. In the first half alone, Via had 165 yards rushing.
Via was essentially unstoppable as two of his touchdown runs were of 50+ yards (50 and 60). Via also was a force on the defensive end with an interception and several pass breakups.
On the season, Via in just three games has 11 total touchdowns, 10 of those touchdowns coming on the ground.
The Mountaineers also grabbed contributions from Brandon Seckner who knocked down a 30 yard field goal and a rushing touchdown from Hayden Knighton.
For the Cougars, their four-game win streak over the Mountaineers came to an end.
The Cougars only time getting on the scoreboard came early in the game with just over four minutes left in the first quarter as J’yon Smith returned the Mountaineers squib kick 54 yards to the end zone.
The Cougars finished with two players having 40+ yard games on the ground as Neeko Jeter had 48 yards and Rocklynn Phillips finished with 46.
The Mountaineers finish with a record of 29-11 all-time against the Cougars including a 22-5 record against them in the Brackman Cup Game.
For the first time since the 2010 season, the Mountaineers are 3-0 through their first three games of the season. This Friday they host the 2-1 Cave Spring Knights whom are coming off of a 10-3 home loss to Glenvar. It’s also Homecoming night for the Mountaineers.
Meanwhile, the Cougars after dropping their first three games of the season will look to bounce back on Friday when they’re back on the road against the 1-1 James River Knights (Buchanan). The Knights on the road last week beat Parry McCluer 47-7.
