On Thursday, the volleyball rivalry of crosstown rivals met its conclusion.
The Covington Cougars (7-2) defeated the Alleghany Mountaineers (0-9) in straight sets at the Cougar Den in what was the final meeting between both schools before the two become one next year with the merge.
It was the fourth time that the Cougars and Mountaineers had met this season with the Cougars winning all four matches. The Cougars went on to win 10 straight sets across their four wins over the Mountaineers that included their two meetings at the Eastern Montgomery Invitational a few weekends ago. The only set the Mountaineers won was the very first set in the teams first meeting at Mountaineer Gym.
In the win on Thursday, Aubrey Brown led the way for the Cougars with 12 kills. Meanwhile, Kaiya Lian led the game with 14 digs, while Lexi Dressler and Gabby Marshall combined for 23 assists.
Despite the loss, Lainie McCormick led the Mountaineers with four blocks and Lindsay Wrenn added three kills.
While the Cougars were the winners in the final meeting between both schools, the possible highlight of the night came afterwards when both teams came together for a “pass the volleyball” ceremony where each schools volleyballs would be passed around that represented the new school colors for the Alleghany Cougars.
The Cougars are back home at the Cougar Den on Tuesday as they kick off Pioneer District play hosting the Highland Rams.
For the Mountaineers, they are back on the court on Thursday when they travel to Fishersville to take on the Wilson Memorial Green Hornets. The Mountaineers will look to pick up their first win of the season on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Cougars JV team continued with their undefeated season as they improved to 9-0 with a three set victory over the Mountaineers JV team. The loss dropped the Mountaineers to 5-4 on the season.
