“Dry” Agent May Lose His Farm
W. C. Schroeder, one of the prohibition agents operating in Powhatan County, made a capture a few days ago that surprised him. Not long ago he rented a farm to a man named Elijah Mann. Then the officer received a tip that Elijah was operating a still in the neighborhood. A man piloted Schroder to the farm that was rented by Mann, and Schroeder found a still on his own land. A fine legal point is raised, as the law stipulates confiscation of land when a still is found on it. Here is a case where the officer may lose his farm because of his zeal in upholding the law. Mann was held for court action.

Mr. Alex Robertson, GOP Candidate Has Many Friends
Alex S. Robertson, of Covington, who yesterday filed his notice of candidacy for the house of delegates against B. C. Goodwin, the incumbent, and a candidate for re-election, has been a resident of Covington for 38 years, having been with the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company for five years and later with the Covington Machine Company for 30 years. He has a large acquaintance in Covington and Alleghany County and his friends believe that he will make a credible run.

Variety Marks Labor Day Fete In Covington
Variety might be cited as the keynote of the 1962 Labor Day Parade, which drew several thousand spectators from throughout the area yesterday from pretty girls, horses and politicians to the Norfolk Radio Supply School, Navy Drill Team, football players and flats. The parade has been sponsored by Local 675 United Paperworkers and Papermakers AFLCIO, since 1945. Temple L. Kessinger is president of the union.

Attorney Resigns
Hal St. Clair, attorney for Alleghany County submitted his resignation of the position effective September 1. According to Alleghany County Administrator, Malcom Sammons, a replacement for St. Clair has not been named. St Clair was elected Commonwealth’s Attorney in 1976 and then also served as County Attorney. He did not seek re-election for Commonwealth’s Attorney in 1983 but remained Covington’s Attorney when the two positions were separated.

4th Annual Putts For Mutts
The Alleghany Humane Society recently held its 4th annual Putts for Mutts golf tournament at the Lower Cascades in Bath County. Forty players enjoyed an afternoon of golf to support the Humane Society. Members of the winning team, pictured below, include left to right: Michael Martin, B.R. Rupert, Chris Dressler and Susan Potter.
