Megan McHenry has been named the first student-member of the Alleghany Highlands Regional Library Board of Trustees.
McHenry’s appointment was approved by the board at its April 2022 meeting. “We thought it was important to have a student on our board because they are an important part of the community the regional library is here to serve,” said Josh Hagy, who was chairman of the board at the time of McHenry’s appointment.
“As a student, I’m excited to bring new opinions and fresh ideas to the board and to the community,” said McHenry.
While she is a high school student, McHenry’s role on the board is the same as any other trustee, with all the voting rights and privileges of any other board member.
“I hope this will be a valuable learning experience for Megan and for us,” said AHRL Director Lisa Hicks. “We’re always looking for new ideas and new ways to reach younger audiences. We look forward to having Megan be a part of our board.”
McHenry is a rising senior at Alleghany High School, where she is a member of the National Honor Society, the swim team, the chief photographer of the yearbook staff, a member of the one-act theater cast, and played several roles in last year’s performance of “Macbeth.”
The board hopes to maintain a student presence after McHenry has graduated and moved on to pursue her educational and career goals.
“Our hope would be to have a student representative on the board for a couple of years until they have moved on and then have another student be appointed in their place,” said Hicks. “It’s a great way to make sure we’re meeting the educational needs of our students.”
