According to Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, several new boating laws became effective as of July 1, 2022.
Items required on paddlecraft (canoe, kayaks, or SUP) – life jackets of the proper size and fit and approved for the activity are required and whistles are required. If operating after sunset, they will need a single white light/electronic torch and if operating on coastal waters after sunset they also need nighttime visual distress signals (VDS).
