2-cent Gas Tax Started Today
Owners of automobile and other motor vehicles throughout Virginia felt the first effect of the special motor fuel tax today, when the law enacted at the extraordinary session of the General Assembly becomes effective under a ruling of Attorney-General Saunders. The law, which became operative today, imposes a tax of 2 cents per gallon on gasoline and other motor fuels until July 1, when the levy is increased to 3 cents per gallon. Revenue from the tax during the remainder of the current year will go to the highway construction fund to be expended by the State Highway Commission.

Mystic Order Of Samaritans Meets At Clifton Forge
The annual state sanctorum of the Ancient Mystic Order of Samaritans convened at Clifton Forge in the Odd Fellows Hall this afternoon at 2 o’clock, with A.L. Robinson, of Clifton Forge, grand monarch, presiding. The business of the afternoon will include the election of next year’s officers and the selection of a 1938 meeting site.

Telephone Company Plans $800,000 Building Here
The Chamber of Commerce has been authorized to announce that the Clifton Forge-Waynesboro Telephone Company will construct a new and greatly enlarged building to serve the expanding needs of Covington, Clifton Forge, Potts Creek and the surrounding area. It will be a two-story and masonry construction, facing on Court Avenue, on the corner of Riverside Avenue. The site of the new building, which is just across Walnut Alley, is the property formerly known as the Rinehart property. It was purchased from the Rinehart estate by the city.

McCoy Candidate In Bath County
Judith L. McCoy has announced that she is a candidate for the Millboro Magisterial District seat on the Bath County Board of Supervisors. McCoy is a 1959 graduate of Hinton High School, Hinton, W.Va., and has lived in the Nimrod Hall area of Bath County for 24 years. She and her husband John have four grown daughters. “My campaign will be straight-forward and honest,” stated McCoy. “The number one priority for Bath County should be to get some kind of industry, or industries, located here to provide jobs for our people.”

292 Triathletes Run, Swim, Bike in Ninth Annual Moomaw Madness
A total of 292 triathletes participated in Saturday’s Moomaw Madness Sprint Triathlon. The ninth annual Bath County Triathlon was part of the Virginia Triathlon series and was held at Lake Moomaw Marina. “It went really well,” said Melinda Nichols, the executive director of the Bath County Chamber of Commerce. “It was a beautiful day.” Andrew Cochran from Morgantown, W.Va., crosses the finish line as the overall winner in Saturday’s Bath County Triathlon.
