The Alleghany Mountaineers boys tennis run at the Region 2C tournament, came to an end on Tuesday following a 5-4 semifinals loss to the Floyd County Buffaloes. The match took nearly seven hours.
After pulling off their upset victory over top seeded Grayson County on Monday, the Mounties came out swinging against the Buffaloes and even put them against the ropes after taking an early 3-0 lead following singles wins from Baron Leitch, Maddox Crance, and Coree Nicely.
The Buffaloes would go on to win five of the next six matches to pull off the comeback victory.
The loss for the Mounties ended their season with an overall record of 10-9 and were one win away from qualifying for the state tournament.
“Despite the very difficult loss, I am proud of our progress”, said Mounties head coach, Seth Davis on twitter.
Last season after knocking off the Blue Devils, the Mounties lost in the regional semifinals as well. The Mounties last season were eliminated by the Radford Bobcats.
While the loss ended the teams season, Leitch, is still representing the Mounties in the Region 2C Singles tournament.
On Wednesday, Leitch won his singles quarterfinals match, 6-1/6-3 to advance to the semifinals which takes place this morning at 8:30 a.m. Leitch will face Glenvar’s, Alec Mcllwain.
The regional singles finals also take place today as well. The matches are held at Virginia Tech. Leitch improved to 16-4 in singles play following his quarterfinal victory. Should Leitch win the singles regional tournament, he will then advance to the state tournament.
Meanwhile, in the Region 2C tournament final, the Bobcats defeated the Buffaloes to win the region championship. The Bobcats had defeated Glenvar in the semifinals.
