The Alleghany Mountaineers boys tennis team (9-8) advanced in regional play on Thursday following their 8-1 play-in victory over the Narrows Green Wave.
It was the Mounties third win over the Green Wave this season.
The victory for the Mounties was also the teams fifth regional tournament victory.
The Mounties grabbed another big performance from senior, Baron Leitch, who won his singles match 8-3 and then went on to win in doubles with partner Maddox Crance, 8-0.
The Mounties finished 3-0 in doubles, while winning five of their six singles matches.
“For the most part, we played well. We’ve had three pretty good performances in a row, including our loss against Glenvar”, said Mounties head coach, Seth Davis.
Next up for the Mounties, a regional tournament matchup with Grayson County.
This meeting will be a rematch of last season in the first round of regionals where the Mounties knocked off an undefeated Grayson County 5-4.
“Our guys are going to have to do the fundamental things better than Grayson. Foot work, ground strokes, volleys, serves. And we are going to have to be mentally tough. I think it will be a close match one way or the other. We have some favorable matchups in some singles and doubles matches. There is no pressure on us, it’s all on them”, said Davis on facing Grayson County.
The meeting with Grayson County takes place today at Virginia Tech.
For the Mounties, Leitch and Crance both had victories in the win over Grayson last regionals. While Leitch and Coree Nicely won in doubles along with Nathan Clark and Crance.
