For the second year in a row, the Pioneer District regular season championship came down to a one-game playoff between the Covington Lady Cougars (13-4) and the Parry McCluer Fighting Blues.
History repeated itself, as the Lady Cougars prevailed over the Fighting Blues to win the regular season district title following a 7-3 victory on Monday at Alleghany High School.
Last season, the Lady Cougars defeated the Fighting Blues 4-3 in the one-game playoff.
Laken Cantrell (4-for-4) led the way for the Lady Cougars with a four-hit, four RBI performance.
The Lady Cougars, who scored seven runs, also grabbed RBI’s from, Addison Morris (2-for-4) and Christina Terrell (1-for-3). Meanwhile, Gabriyl Marshall (3-for-3), had a three-hit day with two runs scored. As a team the Lady Cougars collected 11 hits.
Kayla Bartley (W, 0-for-3), picked up the win for the Lady Cougars as she pitched a complete game. Bartley, gave up three runs (one earned) on four hits, one walk, and struck out 10.
Next up for the Lady Cougars, the team hosts the Eastern Montgomery Mustangs in the quarterfinals of the Pioneer District Tournament this evening at 5:00 p.m. at the Jackson River Sports Complex.
The Lady Cougars were 2-0 against the Mustangs in the regular season, outscoring them 27-2 in two games.
